FRONT GRANITISATION [3 records]

Record 1 2011-12-14

English

Subject field(s)
  • Geochemistry
  • Erosion and Weathering (Geol.)
  • Petrography
CONT

basic front: In granitization, an advancing zone enriched in calcium, magnesium, and iron, that is said to represent those elements in the rock being granitized that are in excess of those required to form granite. During granitization, these elements are believed to be displaced and moved through the rock ahead of the granitization front, to form a zone enriched in minerals such as hornblende and pyroxene.

Key term(s)

Record 2 2011-09-09

English

Subject field(s)
  • Geochemistry
  • Erosion and Weathering (Geol.)
DEF

A zone enriched in basic constituents which are expelled from country rocks undergoing granitization.

OBS

The introduced elements (mainly iron and magnesium but commonly including aluminum, calcium, potassium, hydrogen, titanium, phosphorus, and manganese) are those that are either incompatible with a granite composition or in excess of the appropriate amounts.

OBS

mafic front: The preferred term of some petrologists.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Géochimie
  • Érosion et corrosion (Géologie)
DEF

English

Subject field(s)
  • Petrography
CONT

Highly metamorphosed Archean and Aphebian rocks have been recognized within Grenville Province because the Kenoran and Hudsonian folded belts are truncated by the Grenville Front and it is possible that rocks of the older orogenic belts may extend well into Grenville Province.

CONT

... near the frontier with Brazil, the mountains change from metamorphosed sandstone to granite.

CONT

The successions in which the BIF [banded iron formations] occur usually lie unconformably on highly metamorphosed basement rocks.

CONT

The structure of the rocks forming the shield areas are extremely complicated, consisting mainly of intensely folded, highly metamorphosed rocks. In some shield areas the association of granitic gneisses with metamorphosed basaltic lavas (greenstones) is characteristic.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Pétrographie
CONT
