FROTTEMENT NEGATIF [3 records]

Record 1 1999-04-01

English

Subject field(s)
  • Deep Foundations
DEF

Frictional forces developed on the sides of a pile, or other structure embedded in soil, that tends to cause it to be dragged downward. It is often developed in a consolidating soil mass.

CONT

Overloading of a pile by a settling fill which adds additional weight to them. This effect, called "negative friction", resulted in the failure of steel bearing piles which supported a steel mill in Hamilton, Ontario, caused by the settlement of a 15-ft layer of slag underlain by soft clay.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Fondations profondes
DEF

Subject field(s)
  • Earthmoving
OBS

"Spill-through" Abutments. When a high approach fill is underlain by a soft-clay layer of considerable thickness, the stresses due to lateral pressures and to vertical "drag" (i.e., to negative-friction) loads of the clay layer on the rear row of piles under a continuous abutment tend to become very large (...)
