En 1959, le Meteorological Office reçut l'autorisation de créer une High Altitude Research Unit avec mission d’effectuer des études de l'atmosphère jusqu'à 80 km d’altitude. La petite fusée météorologique à poudre Skua fut créée [...] Il s’agissait d’une fusée de 2, 24 m de long pour 12, 7 cm de diamètre pesant 36, 7 kg(57, 6 kg avec le booster), lancée à partir d’un simple tube de 5 m de long. Le booster Chick brûlait pendant 0. 2 sec et se séparait vers 20 m d’altitude pour être récupérée par parachute. Le second étage Bantam brûlait une trentaine de secondes et pouvait atteindre environ 70 km d’altitude avec 5 kg de charge utile(un parachute permettant les mesures relatives au vent et une sonde pour les mesures de température).

The Apollo spacecraft abort escape system was similar to that used in the Mercury Project, consisting of an escape rocket separated from the attached spacecraft by a tower. The rocket was provided, if required to lift the Command Module away from the booster to an altitude high enough for safe parachute deployment.

Le BP, un LM [module lunaire] adapté(le tronc de cône reliant le S4B, troisième étage du lanceur et qui s’ouvre en quatre pétales, libérant le module lunaire) le SM, module de service, ainsi que le cône protecteur avec la fusée d’éjection LES, Launch Escape System, sont mis en orbite pour la première fois.

When it is completed, the K-1 will be the first commercially available, fully reusable launch vehicle to provide low-cost access to space for low earth-orbiting satellites. The K-1 is powered by modified Russian rocket engines, provided by Aerojet, that burn LOX (liquid oxygen) and kerosene. Thrust is produced when the appropriate mixture of LOX and kerosene is pumped into the combustion chamber and ignited.

The K-1 will be able to deliver approximately 3,200 kg (7,000 lbm) of pressurized cargo to the ISS and return approximately 900 kg (2,000 lbm) of recoverable downmass. The K-1 cargo module can accommodate a volume of 30 m³ (1,000 ft³) equivalent to five International Standard Payload Racks. The K-1 is also capable of providing up to 40km (25 nmi) reboost and attitude control for ISS, an important feature for maintaining the ISS orbit, and conducting on-orbit technology demonstration as precursor risk reduction missions.
