Le Service central de protection contre les rayonnements ionisants(SCPRI) a été créé en 1957 et dépendait du ministère de la santé français. Il a été dirigé par le professeur Pierre Pellerin et a connu une considérable médiatisation pendant les jours qui ont suivi l'explosion à la centrale nucléaire de Tchernobyl. Coque RD 24. L'emballage RD 24 est une coque permettant d’assurer le transport de 4 fûts de déchets de 60 litres en tôle d’acier. Il se présente sous la forme d’un cylindre à axe vertical possédant quatre alvéoles, chacune obturée par un bouchon immobilisé par un cadre, l'ensemble étant fermé par un couvercle d’étanchéité. Chaque alvéole reçoit un fût en tôle d’acier de 60 litres. L'emballage comporte :-une virole extérieure en acier de 20 mm d’épaisseur,-une protection thermique en plâtre de 20 mm d’épaisseur,-un blindage assurant la protection contre les rayonnements, constitué par une épaisseur de plomb de 185 mm,-une virole intérieure en acier de 15 mm d’épaisseur.
