Utility shafts. Utility chases for piping and wiring are very common in multistory buildings. Because the utilities must serve each floor, it is more convenient and economical to run them in a common location. These vertical shafts run from the basement up through the building to provide water, sanitary, electricity, and telephone services on each floor. These utility shafts have contributed to the spread of fire and smoke with the resulting loss of life and property.

In coal mines, the scraper bucket is a bottomless, three-sided box, with a hinged back. The hinge operates in a forward direction so that on the return journey on the coalface, the back opens allowing the box to remain empty. On the loading journey, the coal closes the hinge and the material is drawn or scraped forward to the point of discharge.

The slusher uses a scraper bucket to draw ore from the stope to the ore pass. It is equipped with rotating drums, wires and pulleys, arranged to produce a back and forth scraper route.

Le scraper, ou racloir [...] est une pelle tirée par câble et qui attaque de haut en bas le tas à charger. Le scraper ravance en général les produits sur le mur jusqu'à une estacade de chargement sous laquelle circulent des berlines. La forme de la pelle fait qu'elle ne racle que dans le sens front-estacade. Dans son trajet de retour, elle glisse sur le tas sans y pénétrer.(Dans certains cas, la tôle arrière du scraper, mobile autour d’un axe supérieur horizontal, se rabat autour de celui-ci dans le trajet retour qui est ainsi facilité). Le scraper est fixé à deux câbles aboutissant aux deux tambours d’un treuil spécial. Le câble de retour, avant d’arriver au treuil, passe dans la gorge d’une poulie fixée à front de galerie.
