Les principaux procédés de soudage à l'arc sont : le soudage avec électrode enrobée [...]; le soudage sous flux en poudre [...]; le soudage sous protection gazeuse avec fil fusible, dans lequel l'arc et le bain de fusion sont protégés de l'atmosphère ambiante par un gaz provenant d’une source extérieure. Selon la nature de ce gaz, on distingue le soudage MIG(de l'anglais Metal Inert Gas), dans lequel la protection est assurée par un gaz inerte(argon ou hélium), et le soudage MAG(de l'anglais Metal Active Gas), dans lequel la protection est assurée par un gaz ou un mélange gazeux actif, contenant généralement du CO2. Dans les deux cas, l'électrode peut être soit un fil nu massif, soit un fil tubulaire fourré de flux.

Comme ce procédé de soudage MIG utilise un apport de chaleur peu élevé et des vitesses d’avancement élevées, il convient à l’assemblage de pièces d’automobiles en aciers légers et à paroi mince.

En soudage semi-automatique, le dispositif automatique de dévidage du fil est, soit incorporé à la torche, soit indépendant. Le système est plus maniable dans le second cas où le fil-électrode, le courant, le gaz de protection et, éventuellement, l'eau de refroidissement, passent dans une gaine flexible à canaux multiples. Le fil, de plus fort diamètre, est poussé par des galets striés ou à gorge tandis que, dans le premier cas, il est tiré. Le refroidissement se fait par l'air ambiant et la circulation du gaz inerte sur les torches utilisables jusqu'à 250 à 300 A et au-delà, par eau. Dans la buse terminant la torche de soudage, le fil-électrode est entouré d’un jet concentrique de gaz. En appuyant sur la détente(gâchette) du pistolet, on commande le courant, le gaz de protection et l'eau. Le fil-électrode démarre immédiatement après l'amorçage de l'arc.

OBS

Cette technique est dénommée «manuelle» par certains spécialistes qui considèrent, à juste raison, que le terme «semi-automatique» ne reflète pas la dextérité que le soudeur doit nécessairement posséder pour exécuter des assemblages satisfaisants.
