There are three main commercially available methods to convert natural gas into hydrogen and carbon by-products: 1) Steam methane reforming (SMR) which uses high temperature water as an oxidant and a source of hydrogen, 2) Autothermal reforming which use both water and air oxidants, and 3) Pyrolysis which relies on methane splitting into hydrogen and solid carbon using high heat. 1, record 1, English, - autothermal%20reforming

Pyrolysis, also termed thermolysis (Greek: pur = fire; thermos = warm; luo = loosen), is a process of chemical and thermal decomposition, generally leading to smaller molecules. Semantically, the term thermolysis is more appropriate than pyrolysis, since fire implies the presence of oxygen and hence of reactive and oxygen-bearing intermediates. In most pyrolysis processes, however, air is excluded, for reasons of safety, product quality, and yield. 3, record 5, English, - thermolysis

Retort technology ... charcoal processes ... The Lambiotte continuous carbonization process is related to the multi-stage type reactor .... Wood is fed continuously through a vertical cylinder into a retort. There, it undergoes three different treatments, moving slowly down to the bottom of the retort. In the first, it is dried, in the second, the charcoal process takes place, and in the third, charcoal is cooled. For the drying stage, pyroligneous gases are removed from the carbonization zone and fanned to the drying zone where they burn with a controlled supply of air. For the cooling stage, gases are removed from under the carbonization stage, where tars have been cracked, and reinjected at the bottom of the retort after having crossed a water cooled system. The sufficiently cooled charcoal is extracted from the bottom of the retort. The level of raw material inside the retort is kept at the maximum height possible. The excess of gas (50%) is generally flared off but can be directed through a by-product recovery system as for the Sific process. The process is fully automated. 1, record 11, English, - Lambiotte%20continuous%20carbonization%20process

In fluidized beds and suspension gasification, there is continuous relative motion of the discrete solid particles, while in fixed bed gasifiers there is much slower stratified motion of the solid bed as a whole, generally downward by gravity. The gas can then pass either in the opposite direction to the fuel (updraft or counterflow gasifiers) ... or in the same direction (downdraft or coflow gasifiers) .... While fixed bed coal gasifiers are updraft, biomass gasifiers can be either updraft or downdraft, depending on the purpose for which the gas is to be used. Updraft gasifiers can use very wet wood, but because the pyrolysis products are immediately cooled, the gas contains up to 30% of tar and oil. 1, record 12, English, - updraft%20gasifier

1, record 12, French, - gazog%C3%A8ne%20classique

The exothermic oxygen-consuming reactions occur very rapidly to supply the heat for endothermic reactions of carbon with steam and, to a lesser extent, CO2. The rate of the CO2-C reaction is relatively low. The approach of the water-gas shift reaction is dependent upon the gasification process, gasification temperature, residence time, nature of the fuel, and catalytic activity of the ash. 1, record 14, English, - water%2Dgas%20shift%20reaction
