Record number: 5, Textual support number: 1 CONT
Photosynthesis is the chemical process where plants and some bacteria can capture and organically fix the energy of the sun. ... The main product of photosynthesis is a carbohydrate, such as the sugar glucose, and oxygen which is released to the atmosphere. All of the sugar produced in the photosynthetic cells of plants and other organisms is derived from the initial chemical combining of carbon dioxide and water with sunlight. This chemical reaction is catalyzed by chlorophyll acting in concert with other pigment, lipid, sugars, protein, and nucleic acid molecules. Sugars created in photosynthesis can be later converted by the plant to starch for storage, or it can be combined with other sugar molecules to form specialized carbohydrates such as cellulose, or it can be combined with other nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and sulfur, to build complex molecules such as proteins and nucleic acids. 3, record 5, English, - photosynthesis

4, record 5, French, - photosynth%C3%A8se

Record number: 6, Textual support number: 1 CONT
In the oxo process for alcohol manufacture, hydroformylation of olefins to aldehydes is the first step. The second step is the hydrogenation of the aldehydes to alcohols. At times the term "oxo process" is used in reference to the hydroformylation step alone. In the hydroformylation step, olefin, carbon monoxide, and hydrogen are reacted over a cobalt catalyst to produce an aldehyde which has one more carbon atom than the feed olefin. 1, record 6, English, - hydroformylation

The fuel can be converted into synthesis gas, a mix of CO and H, either by steam reforming (natural gas) in the presence of water, or by partial oxidation in the presence of oxygen. The CO in the mix reacts with the water during the shift conversion stage to form CO2 and hydrogen. Thus, the CO2 is separated from the hydrogen under good conditions (precombustion capture) and the hydrogen can be used to produce energy (electricity or heat) without emitting CO2. 1, record 25, English, - partial%20oxidation%20in%20the%20presence%20of%20oxygen

Pre-combustion capture involves reacting a fuel with oxygen or air and/or steam to give mainly a 'synthesis gas (syngas)' or 'fuel gas' composed of carbon monoxide and hydrogen. The carbon monoxide is reacted with steam in a catalytic reactor, called a shift converter, to give CO2 and more hydrogen. CO2 is then separated, usually by a physical or chemical absorption process, resulting in a hydrogen-rich fuel whith can be used in many applications, such as boilers, furnaces, gas turbines, engines and fuel cells. 3, record 28, English, - precombustion%20capture

Compared to existing coal power plants, clean coal technology (CCT) plants have the potential to both increase the competitiveness and environmental acceptance of coal, through increased overall thermal efficiency and reduced emissions of GHG [greenhouse gas] and other air pollutants. Given the importance of coal-based energy to the global economy and the need to reduce emissions, nations throughout the world are accelerating the development of a host of CCTs including new chemical processes that extract energy from coal in the form of electricity, heat and synthesis gas (H2 and CO) with near zero pollutant emissions. 2, record 31, English, - clean%20coal%20technology

2, record 31, French, - technologie%20du%20charbon%20%C3%A9pur%C3%A9

Several thermochemical methods for converting biomass into chemicals, fuels and synthetic gases are currently under development. Various reactor configurations, catalysts and reaction conditions are employed depending primarily upon the desired product. Steam gasification is one method being developed for the production of synthetic gases from biomass. Steam gasification involves contacting biomass at elevated temperatures with water vapor. The overall conversion of biomass to gases can be represented by two stages. During the first stage - the rapid volatilization stage - biomass reacts rapidly to produce gases, condensible liquids and a char residue. In the second stage the char residue is slowly converted to gases by pyrolysis and the carbon-steam reaction .... 1, record 41, English, - steam%20gasification

Coprocessing has technical and economic advantages over coal liquefaction. The capital and operating costs associated with the solvent recycle loop are eliminated by replacing the product recycle stream with a fresh stream of petroleum residue or heavy oil. This also results in more efficient utilization of the reactor volume because both the coal and the carrier solvent are upgraded and contribute to the liquid product. 1, record 42, English, - solvent%20recycle%20loop
