In early October of each year, contestants and observers come from all over western Canada and the northern United States to this festival, swelling the population of Smoky Lake to near 40,000 requiring almost every permanent resident of the town to volunteer to help make the weekend a success. The residents of Smoky Lake have worked tirelessly to make this weekend a real success with steam thrashing demonstrations, a farmers market, displays, and of course, giant pumpkins.

Chaque année, au début octobre, les concurrents et les observateurs viennent de toutes les localités de l’Ouest canadien et du Nord des États-Unis, pour assister à ce festival qui fait grimper la population de Smoky Lake à près de 40 000 habitants. Cette augmentation soudaine de la population exige presque que chaque résident permanent se porte bénévole pour assurer le succès de ce festival d’une fin de semaine. Les habitants de Smoky Lake travaillent sans relâche et présentent entre autres des démonstrations de batteuses à vapeur, un marché de produits de la ferme, des présentoirs et, bien sûr, des citrouilles géantes.
