Sum Frequency Generation Spectroscopy (SFG) is a technique used to analyze surfaces and interfaces. This spectroscopy method utilizes sum frequency generation, where two light beams mix at a surface and generate an output beam with a frequency equal to the sum of the two input frequencies. From the experiment setup and the output beam, one can deduce the composition, orientation distributions, and some structural information of molecules on a surface. En juin 1989, une nouvelle génération de lasers YAG Lumonics a été introduite au Salon de Munich : il s’agit de lasers de découpe, délivrant une puissance moyenne de 1 kW. [...] La cavité résonnante(l'oscillateur) chargée de générer la lumière est associée à un amplificateur. Ici, deux barreaux de grenat d’yttrium aluminium se trouvent installés en série. On soude alors des aciers, jusqu'à 8 à 10 mm de profondeur, par superposition d’impulsions avec un taux de recouvrement de 50 à 80%. Le laser de découpe possède un faisceau de meilleure qualité, car on délaisse la fibre optique pour une optique d’usinage classique, à lentilles. Cette optique concentre le faisceau sur une tache focale de diamètre plus faible : 200 microns, alors qu'on ne descend guère au-dessous de 0, 5mm; mais qualité oblige, la puissance moyenne est ramenée à 800 W. autre nouvelle application, le pulse shaping. Une sorte de "marteau piqueur" à rayon laser qui permet de modeler la forme des impulsions optiques pour obtenir un effet de prétraitement des matériaux très réfléchissants tels que l'aluminium, ou en effet de percussion lors de l'arrivée des impulsions de forte puissance crête(22 kW au lieu de 5 kW pour le soudage et la découpe) en perçage.
