Les tuyaux en grès vernissé s’obtiennent par étirage à la filière et cuisson d’une pâte bien corroyée d’argiles sélectionnées. La cuisson est poussée jusqu'à la vitrification, soit à température voisine de 1 300 °. Il en résulte un produit imperméable à l'eau et qui résiste parfaitement aux acides. Les produits en grès doivent leur aspect brillant à la mince couche de verre qui les recouvre; elle se forme à la fin de la cuisson, après introduction dans le four de sel de cuisine.
