A CMG (control moment gyro) is an actuator consisting of a spinner with a sustained kinetic moment modulus h and one or two motor-driven tilt axes. One-axis CMGs are used to generate very high dynamic moments. The produced gyroscopic torque is proportional to h and to the precession rate (i.e. tilting rate). It is orthogonal to the precession axis and is directly transmitted to the satellite by the tilt motor bearings. Two-axis CMGs are less used and have a limited dynamic moment since the produced gyroscopic torque has to be partially compensated by the tilt motor. 1, record 1, English, - two%2Daxis%20CMG

On distingue les gyrodynes 1-axe (une seule vitesse cardan commandée par toupie, en précession) dont le couple moteur est directement transmis au satellite par les bâtis et les gyrodynes 2-axes montés sur un double cardan avec vitesses de précession et nutation commandées. Dans ce cas, l’effet d’amplification de couple --le fait qu’un faible couple autour de l’axe de précession produise un fort couple autour de l’axe perpendiculaire-- est moins important car le moteur de précession autour d’un des axes doit surpasser les couples de précession produits par l’autre.
