En l'état actuel, le virus H5N1 de la grippe aviaire, une souche hautement pathogène, n’ est pas transmissible à l'homme. Mais cela pourrait devenir le cas si ce virus entre en contact avec le virus H3N2 de la grippe qui sévit actuellement en Europe. La grippe est une maladie aiguë virale. On recense 3 types de virus grippaux(A, B et C), mais seuls les types A et B sont responsables d’infections cliniques chez l'homme. Ces virus se définissent en fonction de 2 protéines de surface appelées neuraminidase(N) et hémaglutinine(H). Dans le cas des virus de type A, ces protéines de surfaces sont sujettes à des modifications régulières qui correspondent à des mutations ou réassortiment du génome viral. Ces mutations sont le plus souvent mineures et concernent un sous-type viral sans que le type ne soit modifié. D'autres modifications plus rares sont dites majeures et entraînent l'apparition d’un nouveau type. Les virus A, que l'on retrouve également chez l'animal(porc, cheval, et plusieurs espèces d’oiseaux) sont responsables chez l'homme des épidémies les plus importantes. Il arrive également que des virus grippaux infectant les animaux franchissent la barrière d’espèce et soient directement pathogènes pour l'homme, par exemple, l'épisode de grippe aviaire H5N1 au cours de l'hivers 2003-04 en Asie. Ce phénomène rare mais préoccupant fait l'objet d’une surveillance permanente par l'Organisation Mondiale de la Santé(OMS). 4, record 2, French, - grippe%20A

Avian influenza viruses do not normally infect species other than birds and pigs.
