Age-related macular degeneration is the most common cause of severe loss of eyesight among people 50 and older. Only the center of vision is affected with this disease. It is important to realize that people rarely go blind from it. AMD affects the central vision, and with it, the ability to see fine details. In AMD, a part of the retina called the macula is damaged. In advanced stages, people lose their ability to drive, to see faces, and to read smaller print. In its early stages, AMD may have no signs or symptoms, so people may not suspect they have it. 6, record 2, English, - age%2Drelated%20macular%20degeneration

A standard medical approach, indeed a common lay-person's approach, to thinking about disability involves viewing it as a problem that exists in a person's body. As a consequence, that individual is thought to require treatment or care to fix the disability, to approximate normal functioning, or perhaps as a last measure, to help the individual adapt and learn to function despite the disability. So construed, disability is primarily an individual's medical problem in need of treatment. ... this medical model of disability holds that "a person's functional limitations (impairments) are the root cause of any disadvantages experienced and these disadvantages can therefore only be rectified by treatment or cure." 2, record 75, English, - medical%20model%20of%20disability

Invisiblization. This is a process that has much in common with marginalization, but refers specifically to how groups are represented in language and imagery. The basic idea is that powerful, dominant groups are constantly presented to us - for example through the media - and are strongly associated with positions of power, status, prestige and influence, while other groups are rarely, if ever, seen in this light - it is as if they have been rendered invisible. 1, record 92, English, - invisiblization

handicap: Although the term "handicap" has long been used to refer to this concept in North America and other English-speaking regions, "disability" is now preferred. Used as a noun, "handicap" is considered to be outdated and can be considered offensive. 2, record 96, English, - disability

Record number: 96, Textual support number: 2 OBS
4, record 96, Spanish, - discapacidad
