In response to the Royal Commission on Health Care and Cost, the Ministry of Health of British Columbia is decentralizing much of the health care system. This brings much of the management and accountability for health services "closer to home". The New Directions Development Office was established to guide decentralization process.

In 1973 the Hospital Insurance Commission and the Medical Care Insurance Commission were succeeded and replaced by the Health Services and Insurance Commission. The commission administers on behalf of the Department of Health a broad range of hospital and medical care insurance plans operated by Atlantic Blue Cross Care (formerly Maritime Medical Care Incorporated).
