Au même titre que l'holographie optique, l'holographie acoustique vise à réaliser une image en trois dimensions. Le son est une vibration et possède les mêmes propriétés que la lumière quant aux interférences et à la diffraction. Il est donc possible de réaliser un hologramme acoustique. 1. Nature du son. Le son, comme la lumière, est une onde sinusoïdale. C'est un ébranlement périodique de l'air, une succession de pressions et de détentes. La fréquence fondamentale de la vibration définit la note. Par exemple, le la est à 440Hz. La plage de fréquences audibles s’étale de 20 Hz à 20 kHz.
