Record number: 9, Textual support number: 1 OBS
3, record 9, French, - catalycit%C3%A9

Hypersonic propulsion. Color Enhanced Supersonic Hydrogen Flame Through funding from the Hyper-X Program Office at NASA Langley, an experimental study of a dual-mode scramjet combustor is being conducted at the Aerospace Research Laboratory of the University of Virginia. Using conventional instrumentation and multiple laser-based diagnostic techniques, the study aims to further the understanding of the fuel-air mixing and combustion processes within the combustor and to resolve the uncertainty in CFD predictions of such flows. The majority of the experiments are being conducted using a high-enthalpy, continuous-flow facility. This facility simulates Mach 5 flight of a scramjet operating with ramp fuel injection of hydrogen. NASA Langley is performing numerical modeling of the combustor and these results are being compared with the experimental measurements. 2, record 13, English, - hypersonic%20propulsion

2, record 13, French, - propulsion%20hypersonique

The Common Aero Vehicle is a maneuvering reentry vehicle capable of carrying a payload (primarily munitions) down from a suborbital or orbital atmospheric reentry and either impacting a target directly or dispensing munitions at a chosen dispense location and condition. CAV has a relatively high hypersonic lift to drag ratio (L/D) to give good cross-range. CAV cross-range is roughly 1000 times the hypersonic L/D and typical CAV hypersonic L/Ds of 2.0-3.0 thus give 2000-3000 nautical miles of cross-range. CAV needs to be deployed at very high velocities to be effective and Mach numbers less than 20 for suborbital deliveries produce relatively short ranges and cross-ranges. 2, record 14, English, - common%20aero%20vehicle

A ramjet engine is a mechanically simple aerospace engine that creates thrust by burning fuel similarly to a normal jet-aircraft engine. The big difference between a jet engine and a ramjet is that a jet-turbine uses fans to compress air to optimize combustion, and a ramjet creates air-compression by the forward motion of air through a partially-restricted intake system. Ramjets have no moving parts, which is a big advantage in comparison to the delicate turbine blades in a normal jet-engine, however ramjet engines typically are not very efficient below speeds of Mach 2. 3, record 18, English, - hypersonic%20ramjet

The orbital aircraft has the capability to fly suborbital missions without propellant transfer, to distances of 3,000 to 6,000 nautical miles, depending on the aerodynamic configuration This capability exists because the airframe is capable of independent takeoff and landing. This offers a transcontinental range for a number of alternate missions that are difficult to imagine for an air launch concept. For the same reason, the tanker and orbital aircraft may be based at different locations, and interfaced only in flight. This offers more basing flexibility and removes the requirements for specialized facilities and ground support equipment such as that needed to mate the Shuttle orbiter to its carrier aircraft. 2, record 25, English, - orbital%20aircraft

3, record 31, French, - HyperSoar

The speed and altitude regimes of these vehicles are bounded by physical and practical limits. At a given altitude, dynamic pressure limitations set maximum and minimum speeds; the minimum is what it takes to lift the vehicle, and the maximum is what the structure can be built to stand. The limits form a hypersonic funnel, a band of increasing Mach and increasing altitude within which lies the optimum cruising envelope for each vehicle. 1, record 39, English, - hypersonic%20funnel
