Les «filons épithermaux» ont une minéralisation rappelant assez précisément les dépôts des sources thermales (silice, calcite, fluorine, barytine, éventuellement or, sulfures de fer, de mercure, d’antimoine). Ils se rencontrent dans des régions d’activité volcanique récente; on peut parfois prouver que l’épaisseur d’assises détruites par l’érosion a été faible depuis leur minéralisation et évaluer la profondeur à laquelle ils se sont formés. Dans ces filons, les cavités sont fréquentes, ainsi que les structures bréchoïdes; les formes sont irrégulières, parce que les fractures ont eu lieu près de la surface.
