Regulatory enzymes occupy key positions in metabolic pathways. The structural elements needed to make a regulatory enzyme are used with great selectivity and imposed only on those enzymes with which it will result in the maximum economy of the cell's resources. An understanding of a particular multienzyme pathway usually suggests which enzymes might make attractive candidates for regulation. For example, many biosynthetic pathways involve a long chain of single chemical steps, each carried out by a discrete enzyme. ... It is obviously most economical for the first enzyme of the pathway to be inhibited once sufficient end product is present. 3, record 23, English, - regulatory%20enzyme

Promotion of a chemical reaction by addition of a substance or enzyme (catalyst) that partakes in, but is not permanently affected by the reaction. In the case of enzymes, it is mediated by the functional groups found in amino acid side chains and coenzymes. Notably, the amino acid side chains of histidine, serine, cysteine, lysine, glutamate, and aspartate are frequently directly involved in the catalytic process. Coenzymes or metals work in conjunction with enzymes to provide a greater variety of functional groups than is available through amino acid side chains alone. 2, record 36, English, - catalysis

DNA technology enables the facile modification of proteins by highly specific mutagenesis of their genes. Enzymes with novel properties may be produced in large quantities from the mutant genes. Kinetic analysis of the mutant enzymes can be combined with high-resolution structural data from protein X-ray crystallography to provide direct measurements on the relationships between structure and function. In particular, the strength and nature of enzyme-substrate interactions and their roles in catalysis and specificity may be studied. 3, record 36, English, - catalysis

According to the symmetry model, binding the first substrate molecule increases the tendency of the remaining subunits to undergo transition to the high-affinity form through an all-or-none effect, all subunits being either in their low-affinity or their high-affinity forms. The sequential model also postulates that the catalytic subunits have two conformational states, but it differs from the symmetry model in postulating that the subunits may undergo individual sequential changes in conformation; between the all-on and all-off states there may be many intermediate conformational states of the enzyme molecule, each having its own intrinsic catalytic activity. 1, record 38, English, - high%2Daffinity%20form

A major protease secreted by cancer cells is called cell factor (MW 40,000). This enzyme is able to act on plasminogen and activate it to plasmin. This is a proteolytic enzyme that dissolves blood clots and also removes exposed protein groups at the cell surface of cancer cells. If plasminogen is removed from the medium the morphology of cancer cells returns to normal. Thus, it is possible that this enzymatic digestion could activate the cancer cell into division. 4, record 54, English, - plasminogen

3, record 60, French, - phytochrome

An ingenious experiment offers hope for a new kind of surgery for cancer. Kenneth Culver (National Cancer Institute - USA spliced a snippet of DNA from a herpes virus into one of these retroviruses and injected the combination into rats suffering from brain cancer. Since cancer cells are about the only cells that are dividing in a cancer-infected brain, the viruses were supposed to invade those cells and multiply. After five days, the rats were treated with an antiherpes drug. The hope was that the toxin would kill herpes-infected cancer cells and leave the rest of the brain alone. In 11 of the 14 rats, the tumors disappeared completely. The results were so promising that an NIH watchdog committee has already approved a similar test on humans. The risks are high. The researchers will, in effect, be putting mouse genes directly into human brains. But the payoff could be great. Cancer Institute researchers are now searching for other inoperable cancers that might succumb to what they are calling molecular surgery. 1, record 66, English, - molecular%20surgery

The theory that all X chromosomes in a cell in excess of one are inactivated (in the form of sex chromatin) on a random basis in all mammalian cells at an early stage of embryogenesis. In the normal human female the paternal X chromosome is inactivated in some cells and the maternal one in the remainder. During oogenesis, the inactive X is reactivated so that products of both Xs are represented in the mammalian egg. 4, record 76, English, - Lyon%20hypothesis

1, record 81, French, - test%20de%20lymphocytotoxicit%C3%A9
