SSRIs treat depression by increasing levels of serotonin in the brain. Serotonin is one of the chemical messengers (neurotransmitters) that carry signals between brain nerve cells (neurons). SSRIs block the reabsorption (reuptake) of serotonin into neurons. This makes more serotonin available to improve transmission of messages between neurons. SSRIs are called selective because they mainly affect serotonin, not other neurotransmitters. SSRIs may also be used to treat conditions other than depression, such as anxiety disorders. 4, record 3, English, - selective%20serotonin%20reuptake%20inhibitor

The prefixes "ortho-," "meta-" and "para-," along with their corresponding abbreviations ("o-," "m-" and "p-"), appear in italics and are ignored in alphabetizing. According to the actual chemical nomenclature rules in organic chemistry (in 2003), the numbers designating the positions of the disubstitution groups (1,2- for "ortho-," 1,3- for "meta-" and 1,4- for "para-") are to be preferred to the symbols "o-," "m-" and "p-." Furthermore, the prefixes "ortho-," "meta-" and "para-" should not be used anymore, and their corresponding abbreviations ("o-," "m-," and "p-") will soon be judged to be avoided, if not totally condemned. 5, record 33, English, - benzene%2D1%2C4%2Ddiol

Proteases act on proteins and break them down into smaller units. Some proteases are useful in breadmaking because they reduce mixing time and produce a more pliable, extensible dough with good handling properties. Sound flour has very little proteolytic activity. If required, proteases may be added in the form of malted cereal flours or various fungal protease preparations. Proteolytic enzymes require time to achieve their full effect on dough. In the sponge-and-dough process, protease is usually added to the sponge stage to give the enzyme more time to act and eliminate the inhibiting effect of salt which is added at the dough stage. 2, record 38, English, - proteolytic%20enzyme

2, record 38, French, - enzyme%20prot%C3%A9olytique

The rationale for multi-target drugs has been strengthened both on theoretical and empirical grounds. Serious diseases that are intractable to treatment were found to have multiple pathogenic factors and examples of successful drugs were shown to affect multiple disease targets. The salient features of multiple-target drugs, low target affinity and rapid binding kinetics, have been responsible for their late discovery and slow development. 4, record 54, English, - multi%2Dtarget%20drug

In reversible inhibition of enzymes ... the inhibitor participates in a rapidly established, easily reversible equilibrium with the enzyme or enzyme-substrate complex, which can be analyzed in terms of the Michaelis-Menten formalism.... The three major types of reversible enzyme inhibition, competitive, uncompetitive, and noncompetitive, can be experimentally distinguished by the effects of the inhibitor on the reaction kinetics of the enzyme, which may be analyzed in terms of the basic Michaelis-Menten rate equation. 2, record 74, French, - inhibition%20r%C3%A9versible

An approach in which the general features on enzyme active sites are studied by correlating the rates of reactions with the structures of the substrates. For instance, by comparing the rates of hydrolysis of a large number of amide derivation of amino acids, it has been demonstrated that chymotrypsin has a strong preference for substrates containing aromatic or bulky hydrophobic R groups, whereas elastase has a strong preference for substrates containing small hydrophobic R groups. Clearly the substrate-binding sites of these enzymes must contain features which account for the observed specificities. Another approach useful in mapping active sites is the use of reagents capable of covalently modifying different types of functional groups in enzyme molecules, in order to establish whether such groups are necessary for catalytic activity. 2, record 75, English, - active%20site%20mapping

Affinity elution is complementary to affinity chromatography in that in the former technique the specificity of interaction is at the stage of desorption from the chromatographic support material, whereas in the latter the specificity occurs at the stage of adsorption. The substrate concentration yielding half-maximal velocity provides a useful index for the analysis of some enzyme regulatory mechanisms... Some allosteric enzymes respond to the binding of a modulator with a change in the apparent Km for the substrate, without change in Vmax.
