Ce sport naît en France vers 1820 et s’appelle «savate» ou «chausson». En 1850, Lecour ajoute la technique des poings à celle des pieds : c'est la boxe française. Avec la montée de la boxe anglaise, la boxe française décline à compter du début du XXe siècle en Europe mais gagne de la popularité en Orient où elle se pratique pieds nus. Après la deuxième Guerre mondiale, le sport connaît un renouveau en Occident. En France, le regain de vogue vient vers 1965; en 1972, on crée la Fédération nationale de boxe française qui devient, en 1976, la Fédération française de boxe française-savate et disciplines assimilées. En Amérique anglophone, on considère le «nouveau sport» comme venant d’Orient et Américanisé par le port de chaussons. On le nomme «kickboxing» au Canada et «karaté plein-contact» aux États-Unis.
