On January 1, 2003, the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme for international trade in rough diamonds was implemented.

The "Kimberley Process" is the principal international initiative taken to respond to the troubling linkage between rebel-directed conflicts and trade in rough diamonds in a number of African states. The Kimberley Process Certification Scheme contains several key commitments, including a requirement that all shipments of rough diamonds imported to or exported from Canada be certified as "non-conflict" under the scheme. It also bans the trade in rough diamonds with non-participant countries.

Le Processus de Kimberley est la principale initiative lancée sur la scène internationale pour briser le lien entre les conflits armés dirigés par des rebelles et le commerce du diamant brut dans de nombreux États africains. Le régime de certification prévu par le Processus de Kimberley comporte plusieurs engagements clés. Il exige notamment que tous les diamants bruts importés au Canada ou exportés soient accompagnés d’un certificat attestant qu'ils ne sont pas des diamants de la guerre. De plus, le régime interdit aux pays participants de faire le commerce du diamant brut avec des pays non participants.

The mining industry in South Africa has seen significant restructuring and changes since the early 90's with the traditional "big six" mining houses - Anglo American/De Beers, Gencor/Billiton, Goldfields, JCI, Anglovaal and Rand Mines - being restructured and extending their global presence. These companies traditionally controlled gold, platinum, chrome, coal and base metal production in South Africa.
