One of the four provinces to form the Canadian Confederation in 1867, the first in the order of precedence established according to the year of entry into Confederation and, if on the same year, according to the population of the entering provinces.

OBS

The name of a province and its form, spelling and abbreviation are to be decided by the provincial toponymy authority, with the agreement of the Government of Canada. One uses "province of Ontario" for the geographical entity, "Province of Ontario" for the provincial administration, "Ontario" as the short form, and "Ont." as the abbreviation.

OBS

Approved by ISO, the Canada Post two-character symbol is ON (or CA-ON). This symbol is the same in all languages and must be used only in postal addresses and statistical charts where the identification of provinces and territories is restricted to two characters. A two-character provincial symbol must not be used instead of the abbreviation in a text or on a geographical map, a poster or a road sign.

The territory covered by the province changed, from the original north side of the Great Lakes in 1867, to established boundaries in 1874 and a larger territory in 1889, to finally get to its actual size in 1912.

On utilise «province de l’Ontario» pour désigner l’entité géographique, «Province de l’Ontario» pour signifier l’administration provinciale, «Ontario» comme désignation courante, et «Ont.» comme abréviation.

Avec l’approbation de l’ISO, l’indicatif à deux lettres de Postes Canada est ON (ou CA-ON); il est le même dans toutes les langues et ne doit être utilisé que dans une adresse ou un tableau statistique où l’identification des provinces et des territoires est restreinte à deux caractères. L’indicatif à deux lettres d’une province ou d’un territoire ne devrait pas être utilisé au lieu de l’abréviation dans un texte, sur une carte géographique, une affiche ou un panneau routier.

Il faut utiliser l’équivalent «province de l’Ontario» dans les documents du gouvernement de l’Ontario, comme cet équivalent est employé dans les Lois révisées de l’Ontario (L.R.O.). L’équivalent «province d’Ontario» est à éviter dans les documents du gouvernement de l’Ontario, bien qu’il soit l’équivalent recommandé dans le Guide canadien de rédaction législative (publié par Justice Canada) et utilisé dans la version française de la Loi constitutionnelle de 1867.

No existe consenso entre los autores sobre el género de los nombres de ciudades y provincias. Aunque algunos sostienen que los nombres que terminan en -a son femeninos y los que terminan en otra vocal o consonante son masculinos, generalmente se hace la concordancia con el sustantivo femenino ciudad, o provincia, según sea el caso.

Pension rights give rise to special difficulties in questions of spousal support. Under the Ontario Family Law Act, R.S.O. 1990, c. F.3, a pension right must be valued as a capital asset that is an entitlement to a future income stream. After retirement, the pension changes from a capital asset into an income asset. When the pension is in pay, in a sense, the pension asset is being liquidated.

Des droits de pension de retraite soulèvent des problèmes particuliers dans le cas de la pension alimentaire. Aux termes de la Loi sur le droit de la famille, L.R.O. 1990, ch. F.3, un droit de pension de retraite doit être considéré comme un bien en capital qui représente un droit à un flux de revenu éventuel. À la retraite, la pension de retraite passe d’un bien en capital à un bien en revenu. Quand la pension de retraite est versée, dans un certain sens, les avoirs de retraite sont liquidés.
