La chambre à couvain est pourvue le long des bords supérieurs(à l'avant et à l'arrière) de bandes métalliques, supportant un nombre de cadres mobiles qui laissent entre eux un interstice juste assez grand pour laisser passer les abeilles. Les cadres sont pourvus de feuilles de cire gaufrée, qui serviront de base à la construction des rayons. Au-dessus de la chambre à couvain se trouve une autre chambre à cadres mobiles, appelée la "hausse", destinée à recevoir l'excédent des provisions emmagasinées. Un toit imperméable abrite entièrement la ruche. Chambre à couvain et hausse sont séparées par une grille, qui empêche la reine d’entrer dans la hausse.
