A 17th-century bracket clock worked by weights and surmounted by a bell in a frame. 3, record 1, English, - lantern%20clock
Record number: 1, Textual support number: 1 OBS
Originally called "house clocks" or "great chamber clocks," lantern clocks were renamed as such during the mid-nineteenth century. As their original name suggests, they were designed as simple, functional timepieces, used to regulate the daily routine and activities of the household in which they hung. Their weight-driven movements were stout, reliable, comparatively cheap and were more accurate than contemporary spring clocks ... Domestic inventories of the period show that lantern clocks were usually hung in a hall or on a staircase, where sufficient space existed beneath for the drop of their weights and where the sound of their bell or alarm could reverberate through the house. 4, record 1, English, - lantern%20clock

There are three principal types of augers used for well drilling: bucket augers, solid-stem augers, and hollow-stem augers. ... Solid-stem augers consist of spiral flanges welded to a pipe. One length of pipe (or auger section) is called a flight; multiple auger sections are often referred to as continuous flighting. The leading auger flight has a special bit or cutter head attached that cuts a hole for the flights to follow. Flights are added as the hole is drilled deeper. Cuttings from the drilling process are brought to the surface by the action of the augers. ... Hollow-stem augers are similar to solid-stem augers in design, except that drill rods can pass through the auger sections. ... Because the flights are hollow, they can be used as temporary casing to hold the hole open while the permanent casing is installed. Wells drilled with hollow-stem augers have been used to construct water supply wells, but they are more often used to construct monitoring wells. 3, record 65, English, - hollow%20stem%20auger

The promise of a successful alliance between visual aids and instruction appeared early. The magic lantern, an early type of projector and one of the oldest devices, was demonstrated in Rome in 1646 by Athanasius Kircher. It was not until the middle of the 19th century, however, that educators were urged to use this aid in their classrooms. On November 11, Saint Martin's day, children in Flanders, the northern parts of the Netherlands, the Catholic areas of Germany and in Austria participate in paper lantern processions. Often, a man dressed as Saint Martin rides on a horse in front of the procession. The children sing songs about Saint Martin and about their lantern. The food traditionally eaten on the day is goose. According to legend, Martin was reluctant to become bishop, which is why he hid in a stable filled with geese. The noise made by the geese betrayed his location to the people who were looking for him. Also in the east part of the Belgian province East-Flanders, children receive presents from Saint Martin on November 11, instead of from Saint Nicholas on December 6, or Santa Claus on December 25. 1, record 72, English, - Saint%20Martin%27s%20day

1, record 72, French, - f%C3%AAte%20de%20la%20Saint%2DMartin

Chimney pots have been documented as early as the 13th Century, although the United States, like much of Europe, largely discovered chimney pots in the mid 1800s. Because of their ability to increase draft up a chimney, they were invaluable in small and large houses alike, as well as in other buildings where fireplaces served as the primary source of heat. Since coal was the fuel of choice, it was of the utmost importance that noxious fumes and soot be vented up the chimney and out of the house. 4, record 73, English, - chimney%20pot
