A disturbance of keratinization of mucous membrane, variously present as small opalescent patches or as extensive leathery plaques, occasionally ulcerated; histologically it may exhibit the features of dyskeratosis, disturbance in the orderly maturation of stratified squamous epithelium and nuclear enlargement, and it is then regarded as precancerous.

Si la leucoplaquia afecta a la boca, se suele asociar a heridas en la mucosa y al abuso en el consumo de tabaco, alcohol y comidas muy condimentadas. La leucoplaquia también puede aparecer en una zona que ha sido dañada de forma reiterada por un diente.

Oral leukoplakia is considered a premalignant condition and is often tobacco-induced. When evidence of Epstein-Barr virus is present, the condition is called "hairy leukoplakia".

A white filiform to flat patch occurring on the tongue or, rarely, on the buccal mucosa, caused by infection with Epstein-Barr virus and associated with human immunodeficiency virus infection; it is a predictor of the subsequent development of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome.

OBS

The lesion appears raised, with a corrugated or hairy surface due to keratin projections.
