LUCIFERASE [3 records]

Record 1 2011-01-12

English

Subject field(s)
  • Molecular Biology
  • Biological Sciences
  • Biotechnology
DEF

Emission of light as a consequence of the cellular oxidation of some substrate (luciferins) in the presence of an enzyme (luciferases). It is present in bacteria, fungi, protozoa, and species belonging to 40 different orders of animals.

CONT

Bioluminescence results from a chemical reaction (chemiluminescence) in which the conversion of chemical energy to radiant energy is direct and virtually 100 percent efficient; i.e., very little heat is given off in the process. For this reason the emission is called cold light, or luminescence.

DEF

CONT

A trivial name for a variety of monooxygenases that catalyze a reaction producing bioluminescence in certain marine crustaceans, fish, bacteria, and insects. The enzyme is a flavo-compound that emits energy in the form of light. The color of light emitted varies with the organism.

English

Subject field(s)
  • Biochemistry
DEF

A chemically active membrane bound particle in Gonyaulax which reacts with molecular oxygen to produce living light or bioluminescence.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Biochimie
DEF
