The rod puppet or stick puppet is supported by a rod held in one hand, while the other hand operates the rods attached to the puppet's hand. Rod puppets are full-length figures supported by a rod running inside the body to the head. These figures are manipulated from below; separate thin rods move the hands and the legs when necessary, allowing the individual joints to move in a relatively natural manner making the figure appear lifelike. 1, record 2, English, - rod%20puppet

2, record 2, French, - marionnette%20%C3%A0%20tiges

Using the term "rod marionette" helps differentiate this type of puppet from the all-string marionette, which is often referred to simply as a marionette. The rod marionette employs a metal rod attached to the centre of the puppet's head as its main control device. The arms and legs can be controlled by smaller rods, strings or a combination of the two. The rod marionette is considered to be the ancestor of the string marionette. 1, record 3, English, - rod%20marionette

The marotte is the most elementary form of rod puppet. Originally, the word "marotte" referred to a jester's stick: a wand topped with a head that was trimmed with particoloured ribbons and bells. Today, the term "marotte" refers to a puppet controlled from below with a single central rod. In French, the term "marotte" can be used even when other rods are added to control the arms, as long as the head and limbs of the marotte are fixed to the central rod and move on the same axis as the stick. 2, record 5, English, - marotte

2, record 5, French, - marotte
