The rod puppet or stick puppet is supported by a rod held in one hand, while the other hand operates the rods attached to the puppet's hand. Rod puppets are full-length figures supported by a rod running inside the body to the head. Habituellement, une tige centrale supporte la tête tandis que deux autres tiges plus petites actionnent les bras. Dans certains cas, la tige centrale peut être cachée par le costume de la marionnette. Souvent, le torse et les bras ne sont pas fixés à la tige centrale qui supporte la tête, ce qui permet de mouvoir la tête séparément du corps. Dans d’autres variantes, le torse et les bras de la marionnette sont fixés, tout comme la tête, à la tige centrale. The marotte is the most elementary form of rod puppet. Originally, the word "marotte" referred to a jester's stick: a wand topped with a head that was trimmed with particoloured ribbons and bells. Today, the term "marotte" refers to a puppet controlled from below with a single central rod. In French, the term "marotte" can be used even when other rods are added to control the arms, as long as the head and limbs of the marotte are fixed to the central rod and move on the same axis as the stick.  2, record 2, English, - marotte

À l'origine, le mot «marotte »désignait le bâton de bouffon, un sceptre surmonté d’une tête garnie de rubans bigarrés et de grelots.
