... in many plants water availability is one of the most important factors limiting photosynthesis under natural conditions. Because water is lost from leaves through the same pores (known as stomata) that carbon dioxide enters, the plant must balance carbon dioxide uptake against water loss. Under conditions of limited water availability, the stomata restrict water loss, which exerts a strong control on the net rate of photosynthesis by limiting the availability of carbon dioxide within the leaf. 1, record 3, English, - carbon%20dioxide%20uptake

1, record 3, French, - absorption%20de%20gaz%20carbonique

Diffusion of CO2 into a C3 Leaf. The pathway for CO2 to enter a leaf and be carboxylated by Rubisco can be described in terms of various resistances to diffusion. 1. Boundary layer resistance - still air at surface of leaf. ... 2. Stomatal resistance - diffusion through the stomatal pore. ... 3. Intercellular air space resistance - diffusion from the pore to the mesophyll cell wall. ... 4. Mesophyll resistance - CO2 dissolves in water bathing the cell wall and diffuses in the aqueous phase into the chloroplasts; it includes the carboxylation resistance (resistance to fixation by Rubisco). 3, record 4, English, - boundary%20layer%20resistance

The carboxylation/oxygenation ratio depends on the CO2 concentration at the active sites of Rubisco, which is the lower, the greater is the diffusion resistance for CO2 in cells. We have worked out a method to calculate this diffusion resistance from the measurements of chlorophyll fluorescence and net CO2 fixation and found that the diffusion resistance is usually considerably smaller than the carboxylation resistance of the enzyme itself (Laisk and Loreto, 1996). 1, record 7, English, - carboxylation%20resistance
