METEORITE CHONDRITIQUE [3 records]

Record 1 2015-03-03

English

Subject field(s)
  • Erosion and Weathering (Geol.)
  • Astronomy
  • Planets
DEF

A meteoric stone characterized by the presence of chondrules.

CONT

... the chondrites are believed to have a similar composition to that of Earth as a whole. It is now believed that the chondritic meteorites represent fragments of material from planets which resembled the early Earth ...

French

Domaine(s)
  • Érosion et corrosion (Géologie)
  • Astronomie
  • Planètes
DEF

Record 2 2013-07-30

English

Subject field(s)
  • Astrochemistry and Cosmochemistry
DEF

An achondritic stony meteorite rich in diopside and olivine.

CONT

The nakhlites (also known as augite–olivine achondrites) consist of approximately 80% by weight of the mineral augite, and about 14% by weight of iron-rich olivine. Their textures suggest they formed within cooling magmas. Nakhlites belong to the class of SNC [Shergotty, Nakhla, and Chassigny] meteorites, which are thought to come from Mars.

Domaine(s)
  • Astrochimie et cosmochimie
OBS

Record 3 2011-05-16

English

Subject field(s)
  • Astronomy
  • Petrography
DEF

A diverse class of chondrites (one of the two divisions of stony meteorites), important because of the insights they provide into the early history of the solar system.

CONT

[These chondrites] comprise about 3 percent of all meteorites collected after being seen to fall to Earth. Carbonaceous chondrites are subdivided into six well-established groups—CI, CM, CV, CO, CR, and CK—based on their bulk chemistry, petrology, and oxygen isotopic compositions.

CONT

Carbonaceous chondrites show very little metamorphism but display evidence of chemical alteration by water, which continued after their formation, suggesting the parent body was rocky material mixed with ice. They contain a varied suite of organic compounds ... and a high content of inert gases.

Domaine(s)
  • Astronomie
  • Pétrographie
CONT

OBS

condrita : meteorito rocoso que contiene pequeñas esferas llamadas cóndrulos.
