A unit of pressure equal to the pressure exerted by a column of mercury 1 millimeter high at sea level and at temperature of 0 °C (32 °F).

The abbreviation mm Hg stands for millimeters (mm) of mercury (Hg). It is a common unit of measurement for the pressure exerted by gases such as air. Normal atmospheric pressure is 760 mm Hg.

La pression atmosphérique est mesurée en pascals(unité du système international). Nous avons coutume, par simplicité de lecture, à utiliser un multiple de cette unité : l'hectopascal(hPa). La pression standard est PO=101325 Pa soit 1013, 25 hPa. Le pascal correspond au millibar autrefois employé. Il existe, en outre d’autres unités de mesure de la pression : le millimètre de mercure(mm Hg), l'atmosphère(atm), le pouce de mercure(in Hg).

A silver-white, brilliant metallic element which bears the symbol Hg (for "hydrargyrum"), is found native (relatively rare) but is more commonly obtained by sublimation from cinnabar, its most important ore, is liquid at ordinary temperatures (in the 0-100°C range), bears the atomic number 80, the atomic weight 200.52, melts at -38.9°C, boils at 356.6°C, and has a density of 13.550 kg/m-3.

hectopascal: Unit of pressure in the SI system, equal to 102 Pa.

Atmospheric pressure is measured in two units, hectopascals (hPa) and inches of mercury (Hg). The hectopascal is the international unit of measure for atmospheric pressure and inches of mercury are used in the U.S. for aviation purposes.

In the U.S., air pressure at the surface is reported in inches of mercury while air pressure aloft is reported in millibars, also known as hectopascals (hPa). Scientists, however, generally use pressures in hectopascals. In the rest of the world, measurements are usually given in hectopascals although you will sometimes see them in centimeters of mercury, especially on older barometers. The term "hectopascals" is replacing the term "millibars."

A millibar is 1000 dynes per square centimeter, or 100 pascal (Pa). Surface pressure averages around 1013 millibars.
