The polymorph of quartz that is stable from 573°C to 870°C, that has a vertical axis of six-fold symmetry and six horizontal axis of two-fold symmetry, and that has a lower refractive index and birefringence than those of alpha quartz.

Some natural substances exist in various mineral forms (polymorphs) and some use of their inversion temperatures can be made in geothermometry. For example, B-quartz inverts to [alpha]-quartz with falling temperature at 573°C. We can determine wether quartz originally crystallized as B-quartz by etching with hydrofluoric acid, and thus decide whether it was deposited above or below 573°C.
