Colorimétrie : L'utilisation de photocolorimètres permet de déceler et de mesurer l'intensité du faisceau transmis par des cellules photo-électriques. Pour obtenir une grande sensibilité on opère en lumière monochromatique obtenue par le monochromateur à prisme ou à réseau d’un spectrocolorimètre.

Cet appareil permet de mesurer une couleur, mais plus précisément d’identifier sa courbe spectrale; cela signifie que si l’on compose à la gouache deux bruns avec des mélanges de couleurs différents et qui semblent parfaitement identiques à l’œil, le spectrocolorimètre va bien identifier deux courbes différentes.
