A gyroscope instrument for indicating direction, containing a free gyroscope which holds its position in azimuth and thus indicates angular deviation from a pre-set heading. 12, record 3, English, - directional%20gyroscope
Record number: 3, Textual support number: 1 CONT
The heading indicator (HI) uses the principle of rigidity in space for it's operation. The gyro is mounted such that it registers changes around the vertical axis only; i.e. direction changes. The compass card attached to the gyro appears to the pilot as though it is turning. In reality, it and the attached gyro are remaining rigid in space, while the aircraft and case turn about the gyro. The HI is not automatically synchronized with the magnetic compass. It must be set to the compass heading while level on the airport surface prior to take-off. 13, record 3, English, - directional%20gyroscope

Record number: 3, Textual support number: 1 CONT
Record number: 3, Textual support number: 2 CONT

Gyroscopic precession. The reaction of a gyro when a force is applied to the spinning wheel. When force is applied to a gyro, the device reacts as if the force had been applied at a point 90 degrees from the point of actual application, in the direction of rotation. Precession affects propellers, which act like gyros, and gyro instruments.

4, record 23, French, - altitude%20des%20nuages
