An Olympic weightlifting lift and bodybuilding exercise performed in two parts: the bar is raised from the floor to the shoulders (the clean), then from the shoulders above the head until both arms are straight, using the strength of both the arms and the legs at the same time (the jerk).

Genny Caterina Pagliaro was already fourth at the junior world championships earlier this year and with a snatch of 75 kg and a jerk of 85 kg she left the other lifters in Dortmund far behind. This snatch result would have given her even a medal in the European Senior championships!

In Olympic weightlifting, the jerk is the movement that completes the clean and jerk sequence in competition. The lifter cleans the weight from the floor while dropping into a position that very closely resembles the bottom portion of a front squat.

Rules for the Clean and Jerk. ... The second part, the Jerk: The athlete bends the legs and extends them as well as the arms to bring the bar to the full stretch of the arms vertically extended. He returns the feet to the same line, arms and legs extended and waits for the referees signal to lower the barbell as soon as the lifter becomes motionless in all parts of the body.
