Lockout and tagging ensures that hazardous energy sources are under the control of each worker. Serious or fatal accidents can occur when people assume that machinery is turned off or made harmless but it isn't. Lockout is a procedure that prevents the release of hazardous energy. It often involves workers using a padlock to keep a switch in the "off" position, or to isolate the energy of moving parts. This prevents electric shock, sudden movement of components, chemical combustion, falling counterweights, and other actions that can endanger lives. Lockout is a physical way to ensure that the energy source is de-energized, deactivated, or otherwise inoperable.

Le cadenassage et l'étiquetage permettent à chaque ouvrier d’intervenir sur les sources d’énergie dangereuse. De graves accidents, qui peuvent être mortels, découlent parfois du fait que quelqu'un tienne pour acquis que la machinerie n’ est pas en marche ou en état de provoquer des blessures, alors que ce n’ est pas le cas. Le cadenassage consiste à prévenir la libération d’une énergie dangereuse. Pour ce faire, il faut souvent que les ouvriers maintiennent un interrupteur en position «OFF(ARRÊT) »au moyen d’un cadenas, ou isolent l'énergie des pièces en mouvement. Ces ouvriers préviennent ainsi le risque de choc électrique, de déplacement subit de pièces, de combustion chimique, de chute de contrepoids et d’autres situations qui peuvent mettre la vie en danger. Le cadenassage est une intervention mécanique permettant de neutraliser une source d’énergie en la désactivant, en la mettant hors tension ou par tout autre moyen.

The International Conference of Labour Historians(ITH) - founded in 1964 [under the name of International Conference of Historians of the Labour Movement] - is a non-governmental organization which promotes the exchange of information among social historians of different political and ideological views and persuasions. The ITH is established as an umbrella organization for institutes, associations and societies dealing with social-historical questions, especially the historiography of labour and its movements.
