The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) is the global governing body of the Paralympic Movement. The IPC organizes the Summer and Winter Paralympic Games, and serves as the International Federation for 13 sports, for which it supervises and co-ordinates the World Championships and other competitions.

The first Olympic-style games for athletes with a disability – now called the "Paralympic Games" – were held after the 1960 Olympic Summer Games in Rome, Italy. The first Paralympic Winter Games took place in Örnsköldsvik, Sweden, in 1976. The Paralympic Games have taken place at the same venues as the Olympic Games since the Seoul 1988 Paralympic Summer Games in South Korea and the Albertville 1992 Paralympic Winter Games in France.

The English language shall be the official language of the IPC. The Constitution is composed both in the English and German. The German version shall govern. Other texts shall be accepted in their English version.

The criteria for belonging to the Paralympic Movement is formal membership or recognition by the IPC, cf Paralympic Family.

Initiated in 2000, the Canadian Paralympic Hall of Fame recognizes and celebrates those who have contributed to the growth and development of the Paralympic Movement individuals or teams. The Canadian Paralympic Committee [CPC] holds an induction process every two years, during a non-Games year. The athlete/team must have been retired from active, international competition for at least 4 years.
