The basic concept of the free-travelling boom is to deploy a V-shaped boom with its apex downwind. If the free end of each arm is retarded by a sea anchor or drogue, ... the whole system will drift downwind at a velocity sensibly less than that of the floating oil .... As the drifting proceeds, the oil moves into the boom array and becomes trapped and concentrated into a relatively thick layer at the apex of the V structure.

Once an oil spill has occurred, the most positive approach to protect the environment is to physically remove the oil from the water ... by the use of mechanical pickup devices commonly called skimmers.

Chapters dealing with these mechanical devices enumerate the following types of skimmers: devices that rely on adhesion to a continuous flexible belt, centrifugal devices, weir devices, oil recovery booms, and skimming boat.

A type of freight forwarder who specializes in air cargo. He usually consolidates the air shipments of various exporters, charging them for actual weight and deriving his profit by paying the airline the lower consolidated rate.
