Le terme «Sick Building Syndrome»(SBS ou Syndrome des Bâtiments Malades), utilisé depuis les années 1970, recouvre une symptomatologie complexe, non spécifique, atypique et indiscutablement liée à l'occupation des locaux. Sa définition très large traduit bien le caractère multifactoriel du problème, qui touche entre 10 et 30% des occupants d’un bâtiment malsain ou «malade». Les facteurs associés au SBS sont multiples : ambiants(chimiques, biologiques, climatiques, environnementaux), personnels, sociaux, organisationnels. Les symptômes les plus fréquemment observés sont : irritation et obstruction nasale; sécheresse et irritation de la muqueuse des yeux, de la gorge, de la peau; manifestations générales(migraine, léthargie, état de fatigue conduisant à un manque de concentration). Des nausées, un changement dans la perception des odeurs et du goût, toux et sifflements respiratoires sont parfois également signalés. Immeuble, tour, édifice «à bureaux» sont des spécifiques : ce syndrome se rencontre aussi dans des milieux qui ne sont pas des bureaux, comme par exemple les hôpitaux. Cependant, comme ce syndrome est la plupart du temps relié aux immeubles à bureaux, ces termes recouvrent, par le fait même, parfaitement bien la notion. Le terme plus général «bâtiment» est plus approprié que celui d’«édifice» ce dernier possédant une connotation de construction importante, de grandes dimensions, et, souvent, dont les qualités architecturales sont remarquables. El Síndrome del Edificio Enfermo (SEE), se conoce también como Sick Building Syndrome (SBS). La Organización Mundial de la Salud lo ha definido como un conjunto de enfermedades originadas o estimuladas por la contaminación del aire en estos espacios cerrados. Es un conjunto de molestias y enfermedades originadas en la mala ventilación, la descompensación de temperaturas, las cargas iónicas y electromagnéticas, las partículas en suspensión, los gases y vapores de origen químico y los bioaerosoles, entre otros agentes causales identificados.
