Le plasmocyte normal est une variété mature d’un des deux types de cellules du système immunitaire, les lymphocytes B, et il sécrète des protéines appelées immunoglobulines ou anticorps. Lorsque les plasmocytes se multiplient de façon excessive, ils peuvent produire une tumeur appelée myélome. Les myélomes peuvent se développer dans plusieurs parties du corps, en particulier dans la moelle osseuse; lorsqu'il existe plusieurs sièges, on parle alors de myélome multiple.
