L'OMS [Organisation mondiale de la santé] définit l'EME comme «un état caractérisé par une crise d’épilepsie qui persiste suffisamment longtemps ou qui se répète à des intervalles suffisamment brefs pour créer une condition fixe et durable». L'EME peut-être convulsif et met alors rapidement en jeu le pronostic vital et fonctionnel, il peut être non convulsif et se présenter sous la forme d’un état confusionnel, de diagnostic difficile, mais ne comportant pas le même risque évolutif. En pratique on considère que l'EME est définit et nécessite une prise en charge spécifique dès que la durée de la condition épileptique est anormalement prolongée et expose à un risque vital ou fonctionnel. Dans le cadre d’une épilepsie convulsive généralisée, on parle d’EME dès la constatation de trois crises successives sans reprise de conscience ou lorsqu'une activité convulsive continue se prolonge au delà de 5 à 10 minutes. 2, record 1, French, - %C3%A9tat%20de%20mal%20%C3%A9pileptique
