L'affleurement rocheux sur lequel est bâti l'Hôtel-Dieu de Québec montre l'une des plus spectaculaires roches des Appalaches. Elle a porté tour à tour le nom d’argile à blocs, de wildflysch et d’olistostrome. Il s’agit d’un mélange pêle-mêle de roches sédimentaires. Au cours des 100 dernières années, elle a intrigué quantité de géologues qui ont émis diverses hypothèses pour expliquer sa formation. [...] Ce type de roches s’est formé à la suite d’énormes glissements sous-marins durant l'avancée des nappes de chevauchement, lors de l'édification de la chaîne de montagnes des Appalaches.
