Le chevalier cuivré est une espèce rare et endémique au Canada dont la répartition mondiale se limite à quelques rivières des basses-terres du sud du Québec ainsi qu'à des courts tronçons du fleuve Saint-Laurent, en aval de Montréal. Découvert en 1942, ce poisson est très fécond(jusqu'à 112 000 œufs pour une femelle de 5, 3 kg) et longévif(il peut vivre plus de 25 ans).
