Put simply, a solar eclipse is a shadow play between three actors: the Sun, the Moon, and the Earth. Illuminated by the Sun, the Moon casts a shadow out into space: a long, thin cone, stretching about 374,000 km out into space, called the umbra. Anyone inside that umbral cone will see the Sun completely blocked out by the Moon. Surrounding the umbra, there is a zone where the Sun is only partly hidden: this is known as the penumbra. Extending out from the tip of the umbral cone is a part of the penumbra known as the antumbra, which comes into play during annular eclipses. 2, record 3, English, - antumbra

1, record 3, French, - anti%2Dombre

Solar eclipses occur when the Moon passes between the Sun and the Earth, causing the Moon to cast a shadow on a portion of the Earth's surface. ... during a total solar eclipse, the Moon aligns perfectly with the Sun and covers the entire solar disk, resulting in a momentary darkening of the sky.
2, record 8, French, - rayon%20cr%C3%A9pusculaire

Record number: 14, Textual support number: 1 CONT
It is most apparent when the sun is low in the sky and when the surface is dew-covered. The explanation of the heiligenschein varies depending upon whether it is seen over a dry or a dew-covered surface. When an observer's shadow is cast on a dry, irregular surface (such as gravel or vegetation), each irregularity near the antisolar point covers its own shadow. In other directions, the average brightness results from a mixture of sunlit and shaded surfaces. The lower the sun in the sky, the longer the shadows and so the greater the contrast with the brighter region near the antisolar point. 4, record 14, English, - Heiligenschein
Record number: 14, Textual support number: 1 OBS
The heiligenschein is occasionally called Cellini's halo, after Benvenuto Cellini who described its behavior in his memoirs of 1562. He even pointed out that it appears to the greatest advantage when the grass is moist with dew, but felt its appearance bespoke the wondrous ways of Gods providence toward me. Shades of this interpretation are also found in the name heiligenschein: It is German for the light of the holy one. 4, record 14, English, - Heiligenschein
