The word "ombudsman" comes from the Swedish words "ombud," meaning "delegate," and "man," in the sense of "human being." … an ombudsman's duties may include the following: defending the rights of citizens by investigating complaints in the public and private sectors; listening to and supporting employees dealing with equity or mental health issues; assisting victims of crime; providing information, advice and mechanisms for resolving grievances and disputes fairly and effectively.

defensor; defensora: El Diccionario panhispánico de dudas aconseja que se utilice la voz "defensor" cuando se hace referencia a la figura que defiende los derechos de grupos determinados, diferente a la persona designada para proteger los derechos fundamentales de los ciudadanos ante los poderes públicos. En casos puntuales, la voz "defensor" va generalmente acompañada del nombre de quien defiende: defensor del lector, defensor del consumidor, etc.
