3, record 3, Spanish, - paraclonaci%C3%B3n

Mitochondrial DNA heteroplasmy (a mixture of normal and mutant) explains why some individuals lose vision and others do not. Large families tend to be homoplasmic for the mutation and many members do not lose vision. Heteroplasmy seems to occur in families where the mutation has arisen recently. Exactly what percentage of mutant DNA is required to lose vision is not yet clear, and a mother's degree of heteroplasmy may differ from that of her offspring. 1, record 5, English, - heteroplasmy

Using the calendar method, a woman records the length of her menstrual cycle over an eight-month period. Then, counting the length of the shortest cycle as the earliest likely day of menstruation and the length of the longest cycle as the latest likely day, she can calculate the fertile period. By subtracting 18 days from the earliest day and 11 days from the last likely day of menstruation, she obtains 2 figures which represent the commencement and conclusion of her fertile period. Outside this time, during her unsafe days, she must ... avoid intercourse. 1, record 12, English, - calendar%20method

1, record 12, French, - m%C3%A9thode%20du%20calendrier

The actual method used in initial crossing of wheat varieties is conditioned by the fact that wheat is bi-sexual and normally self-pollinating. Before the wheat plant has shed its pollen, the anthers are removed with forceps from the flowers of the plant that is to become the female parent, and a cover is slipped over the emasculated wheat head to exclude foreign pollen. Two or three days later, the cover is taken off and ripe anthers are removed from another wheat plant, selected as the male parent, broken over the stigma of each emasculated flower, and the cover replaced. The fertilized egg cells now develop into grains which usually mature a little more than a month later. 2, record 13, English, - fertilized%20egg%20cell

1, record 13, French, - ovule%20f%C3%A9cond%C3%A9

The embryonics team developed an artificial cell, dubbed biodule (biological module), that is used as an elementary unit from which multicellular organisms can ontogenetically develop to perform useful tasks. Cellular differentiation takes place by having each cell compute its coordinates (i.e., position) within a one- or two-dimensional space, after which it can extract the specific gene within the artificial genome responsible for the cell's functionality. 2, record 14, English, - biomodule
