Smog formed by the oxidation of hydrocarbons, the oxidants being produced by photochemical reactions between solar ultraviolet radiation and various atmospheric constituents.

Photochemical smog [is] the predominant type of air pollution in Southern California. It is the result of sunlight reacting with hydrocarbons and oxides of nitrogen in the atmosphere. Ozone also is a component of photochemical smog.

OBS

There are other types of smog; acid smog for example, which is in relation with sulfur emissions rather than nitrogen emissions.

La dénomination de «smog photochimique oxydant» est mauvaise pour caractériser le phénomène puisque la définition précise qu'il est sans rapport avec la fumée [...] C'est la raison pour laquelle il est préférable de parler de «brouillard photochimique oxydant».

Malgré la recommandation d’utiliser «brouillard» plutôt que «smog», c’est ce dernier qui s’est implanté dans l’usage; la proposition de «fumard» (Analyse des gaz, étalonnage et mesure, qualité de l’air, dosage des gaz et des produits - code de source : AFNOR-34, 1983, p. 341) n’a pas eu plus de succès.

The effects of automotive emissions were reviewed for Environment Canada as part of a Socio-Economic Impact Analysis (SEIA) of the proposed revision of Canadian New Motor Vehicle Exhaust Emission Standards. This document investigates the following pollutants related to automobile emissions: carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, photochemical oxidants, hydrocarbons, and diesel exhaust particulates.

London smog episodes were caused largely by soot from coal fires, and London's major air pollution disasters therefore occurred nearly always in the dead of the winter.

OBS

The two general types of smog are the "coal smog" (it killed 4,000 people in London in 1952) and the "photochemical smog" (the predominant type in Southern California).

OBS

A reduced atmosphere is the general chemical feature of the London smog; an oxidized atmosphere is the chemical feature of the Los Angeles smog.

État de l’atmosphère caractérisé par la présence simultanée de polluants gazeux ou vésiculaires à propriétés acides et d’un aérosol de fumées retenus dans un brouillard. Le smog acide a pour origine les produits de combustion des foyers fixes.

Il peut arriver que le dioxyde de soufre se transforme partiellement en trioxyde, donc en acide sulfurique. Pour que cette transformation puisse avoir lieu, il faut que deux conditions soient remplies : l’une concerne l’existence d’une grande concentration de SO2 mais aussi de particules diverses; l’autre est du domaine météorologique et correspond à la présence simultanée d’un brouillard, c’est-à-dire d’un aérosol de microgouttelettes d’eau. [...] On voit que c’est à la présence de ce smog, véritable aérosol d’acide sulfurique, que sont imputables les grands accidents de pollution, tel celui qui a endeuillé Londres en 1952. Ce smog sulfurique est appelé «smog acide» pour le distinguer du «smog oxydant».

Le smog typique de Londres, le smog acide, doit être distingué du smog typique de Los Angeles, le smog photochimique oxydant.
