biochemical oxygen demand; biological oxygen demand; BOD; B.O.D.: [These terms and abbreviations can also refer] to a chemical procedure for determining this amount. This is not a precise quantitative test, although it is widely used as an indication of the organic quality of water. The BOD value is most commonly expressed in milligrams of oxygen consumed per litre of sample during 5 days of incubation at 20 °C and is often used as a robust surrogate of the degree of organic pollution of water. ... BOD can be used as a gauge of the effectiveness of wastewater treatment plants. ... BOD is similar in function to chemical oxygen demand (COD), in that both measure the amount of organic compounds in water. However, COD is less specific, since it measures everything that can be chemically oxidized, rather than just levels of biologically active organic matter. 2, record 5, English, - biochemical%20oxygen%20demand

Cystine, the oxidized form of cysteine, plays a special role in protein structure since its disulfide group serves as a covalent cross-link between two polypeptide chains or between two points in a single chain. Disulfide cross-links can be cleaved by the action of reducing agents, e.g., mercaptoethanol, which yields two molecules of cysteine from cystine. Cystine can also be oxidized by such agents as performic acid, to yield two molecules of cysteic acid. 11, record 93, English, - cystine

6, record 93, French, - cystine
