Despite its name, Labrador tea is not the wholesome beverage that tradition would have us believe. Brewed in hot water, the leaves produce a toxic chemical called ledol which, consumed in sufficient quantity, causes severe cramps and paralysis. 6, record 29, English, - ledol
Record number: 29, Textual support number: 2 CONT
The cousin to wild rosemary, Labrador tea ("Ledum glandulosum" formerly "L. latifolium"), was used in the 17th and 18th centuries in Canada in brewing. In the United States "Ledum goenlandicum" (variety of "Ledum palustre") and "L. glandulosum" grow in swampy and wet places, especially the Pacific Northwest. Wild rosemary ("L.p.") contains a volutile oil, "ledum oil", with strong inebriating effects. The aromatic ledol (in "L.g.") is sedative and slightly narcotic and similar to camphor in that it can cause cerebral irritation in large amounts. 7, record 29, English, - ledol

Plants called bog plants in horticulture differ from aquatics in that they do not live permanently in deep water but rather in wet places, as about lakes and ponds and in bogs. Malaria is both an acute and chronic disease caused by protozoa of the genus Plasmodium. Four species cause human malaria: P. falciparum, P. vivax, P. malariae, and P. ovale. The protozoa are transmitted to humans by female mosquitoes of the genus Anopheles. (Transmission can also occur by direct inoculation of infected red blood cells via transfusion, needles, or congenitally). Some signs and symptoms of the illness are high fever, chills, headache, anemia, and splenomegaly. 1, record 40, English, - acute%20malaria
